Who are Kaweco? Discover the Brand

Kaweco Brand History

Kaweco is a German pen brand with a rich history that spans over a century. Since 1883, the company has been producing high-quality writing instruments, including the popular Kaweco sport fountain pen, that are revered by pen enthusiasts and everyday users alike. Today, Kaweco is known for its innovative designs, attention to detail, and commitment to quality craftsmanship.

The History and Origins of Kaweco

Kaweco is a brand that was founded in Heidelberg in 1883 under the name Heidelberger Federhalterfabrik.   Despite its German origins, Kaweco is often mistaken for a Japanese brand, perhaps due to the popularity of Japanese pens in the world of fine writing. However, Kaweco has remained steadfastly German throughout its more than a century-long history.

1883 Heidelberger Federhalterfabrik early Kaweco

In 1889 business men Heinrich Koch and Rudolph Weber acquired the company and marketed under the brand name KaWeCo derived from Koch, Weber & Compagnie.

The company began as a small factory producing wooden dip pens, but it quickly expanded its product line to include fountain pens and other writing instruments.

One significant milestone in Kaweco's history was the introduction of the Sport pen collection in 1911. This collection included a compact-sized pen that could be carried in a pocket, making it a popular choice among sportsmen and other outdoors enthusiasts. Today, the Kaweco Sport remains one of the brand's most iconic and popular collections.

In 1926, the company officially changed their name to Kaweco instead of the original name Heidelberger Federhalterfabrik, after discussions around marketability and brand awareness.

In the late 1920s the company began to face stiff competition from the likes of Montblanc, Soennecken and, among others, KWG.  With Kaweco steadfastly remaining focused on producing black ebonite pens, their market was eroding quickly from competitors who began to release coloured models made from cellulite.  Added to this, their exports, usually strong, began to wane due to competition from American pen manufacturers.  The inevitable happened, and on 24th May 1929, the company went into liquidation.

At this time, the earlier mentioned KWG, an up and coming pen company, were interested in buying the Kaweco brand, and in September 1929, they completed the purchase and changed its name to Kaweco Badische Füllhalterfabrik, Woringen & Grube.  You may recognise their logo, it looks familiar.

To provide a clean break and a fresh start, they merged their company logo, with the initials of the original founders of Kaweco  KA WE CO, and the now iconic Kaweco logo was born.

The acquisition by KWG helped to grow the Kaweco brand immeasurably, expanding its distribution and production capabilities with the aim of producing reasonably priced fountain pens at scale.

During World War II, production is stopped completely due to the scarcity of available materials, until several months after the end of the war, they received permission to resume trading and at the same time adopting the German Shephard dog as their new mascot.

In the 1950s and 60s, Kaweco struggled to compete with the influx of inexpensive ballpoint pens from Asia, and the company experienced financial difficulties as a result. Mr. Friedrich Grube Senior died on 5th May 1960 and management of the business is passed over to his wife and sons. They continued to produce high-quality writing instruments despite the economic challenges of the time.

Kaweco Factory Workers

In 1981 the company filed for bankruptcy once again, after years of little to no innovations or new ideas.  This appeared to be the end of the story for Kaweco, a once illustrious German pen brand.  However, in 1994, a company called H & M Gutberlet GmbH had the chance to buy the brand name Kaweco.  Michael Gutberlet and his father had a passion for collecting writing instruments, and were fascinated by the rich history of Kaweco.  Having already had experience in the pen market with their company producing components for the leading pen brands, they were intrigued with the possibility of resurrecting this historical brand.  Working tirelessly, Michael was able to rebuild Kaweco into the popular brand it is today.  Slowly reintroducing modern versions of the old pens to once again capture the interest of pen lovers around the world.

Kaweco has introduced new ranges and designs along the way, such as the AL Sport and Special collections, that have helped to attract new fans and rekindle the interest of longtime collectors. Despite the challenges it has faced over the years, Kaweco has remained true to its core values of quality and craftsmanship, making it a beloved brand among pen enthusiasts around the world.

They have been able to stay relevant with the adoption of social media and the ability to bring out new limited edition ranges and colours on a regular basis, and now there is always much hype around what their next offering will be.

Thanks for your reply to my message of last Nov. 8. Yes, I got the Kaweco Brass Sport with the EF nib and I enjoy it very much. I’ve been so impressed with Kaweco that I more recently bought a Kaweco Dia 2 in black/chrome. I independently bought a Bock 076 EF nib for it and removed the original 060 EF nib to keep as a backup for the nib in my Brass Sport. With the 076 nib I adore this Dia 2. For these pens I bought Kaweco Royal Blue and Midnight Blue ink cartridges.
Then I bought a black Kawecomat 3-in-1 black ballpoint/red ballpoint/pencil. I like it, though I don’t see an eraser for the pencil. The pen didn’t come with any literature specific to this model. It makes for a great matching companion set with the Dia 2 fountain pen.
I’m sold on Kaweco! My Kaweco journey started with buying for my grand daughter that sage green Kaweco Sport Collection pen at Truphae pen store in Greenville, South Carolina. Now I hope that my suggestion about an ebonite body & feed retro pen goes somewhere.

With Kaweco’s mindfulness of the brand’s heritage, I wonder if Mr. Gutberlet and the product development people at Kaweco have considered making a modern retro version of the Kaweco black ebonite pen of the early 20th century. It would be a special product if it was made of genuine ebonite.
I bought a Kaweco Sport Collection series pen for my grand daughter for her 11th birthday. She chose sage green at the store. She chose the BB nib. I also bought a Kaweco branded leather case so she won’t lose it. Her school classmates think the pen is “cool.” And, yes, she knows cursive writing. Now I’m buying a Kaweco Brass Sport EF for myself.

    Hi Randall

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience with Kaweco pens on our blog. It’s great to hear that Kaweco (and fountain pens) can still connect with the younger audience.

I’m positive your grand daughter will get a lot of use and fun with her Kaweco fountain pen. It seems like cursive writing is a dying art these days which is a shame. I hope the pen continues to inspire her love for writing.

The idea of a modern retro version of the Kaweco black ebonite pen is quite intriguing. I imagine Mr Gutberlet is always open to considering new ideas and customer feedback their product development process.

The fountain pen community is thriving at the moment, and it is because of brands like Kaweco and others for this success, with new designs and innovations that are helping to keep it fresh. (Along with smaller artisan brands like Ferris Wheel Press who are making inspiring fountain pen inks that manage to capture the imagination in a way that is both fun and exciting.)

Feel free to reach out if you need any help in your fountain pen adventure.

    Thanks

    Andrew

I have the blue steel looking Kaweco, I’m absolutely in love! It’s a joy in writing now, I’ve converted from voice to text on computer to written text again in evening note taking! Thank you very much for the experience! Do you do interchangeable heads for calligraphy? I’d be keen on getting into calligraphy but unsure which is the best way to go! Thank you once again!
