The Roman siege of 70CE brought the devastation of the second Jewish Temple. On this celebrated Islamic site is the Dome of the Rock, standing on Temple Mount alongside the al-Aqsa mosque. The Noble Sanctuary, subsequently both the Dome of the Rock, Al-Aqsa and over one sixth of Jerusalem’s Old City is considered of al-Aqsa, the meaning of which is all that is within wall. This most beautiful Islamic site can be viewed from all over Jerusalem.

The Dome of the Rock is built on the site where Mohammad ascended through the seven heavens to meet with Allah. The monument boasts the oldest surviving mihrab which shows the direction of Mecca. The Dome was built by the Umayyad caliphAbd-al- Malik from 688 to 691AD and was intended to be a shrine for pilgrims. Fearing his supporters may fall victim to the pressure of one of his Muslim adversaries, Caliph Abd al Malik tried to discourage them from making the pilgrimage to Mecca hoping that Jerusalem would become the foremost pilgrimage site for Muslims.

Al-Aqsa mosque is viewed by the Muslim religion as the third holiest place in the world, after Mecca and Medina in Saudia Arabia. Originally a house of prayer and over the years attracting great teachers from all over the world Al-Aqsa was built by the Rashidun caliph Umar and additionally by Abd-al-Malik, completed in 705CE by his son al-Walid. After being destroyed by an earthquake in 746 it was rebuilt and then after a second earthquake in 1033 which almost destroyed it yet again, Al Aqsa was rebuilt to where it stands today.

The lowermost half of the exterior is overlaid with marble while the uppermost is covered with blue inscribed squares which were commissioned by the Turkish Caliph Suleiman the Magnificent in the sixteenth century.

The Al-Aqsa pen is a magnificent piece of art acclaiming the Holy City’s origins, its history steeped in the three monotheistic religions of Islam, Christianity and Judaism.

Using an incredibly unique vegetal resin this pen was carefully designed by Visconti to be the final creation of the compilation of pens dedicated to religion. Its color is taken from the walls of the Mosque, and the flag of Israel. The shape is an octagon covered in small ceramics representing the walls of the Mosque. The top is a detailed replica of the dome. The clip is fashioned with a semiprecious stone replicating the Foundation Stone which is found within the Mosque.

A limited edition of 691 pieces of Silver Vermeil representing the date the Dome of the Rock was completed.
